A JEWEL BY THE SEA Often unpolished, with many rough-cut edges, Portland nevertheless still warrants the moniker given it by native son Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of America's best-loved poets. Follow the bright beacon of Portland Head Light to shore where this gem awaits. Welcome to the Greater Portland Casco Bay Region.

AUTHENT IC - BY NATURE Our hip metropolis, created from the still-planted roots of a prominent fishing industry and working waterfront, offers a natural authenticity unlike that of most urban centers. Despite its popularity as a visitor destination, ours is an inherently real place with real people going about their business, surounded by the incredible natural beauty of our forests, fields, and waterways. With its heady mixture of artistic and outdoor adventure, our region is stylish and sophisticated, yet remains genuine and unpretentious, a place where grey flannel and plaid flannel coexist companionably. And underlying the latest tech, fashion, and culinary scene is a deep sense of continuity. We invite you to experience the character of a region that blends the present with a very special past. ARCHI TECTURE With unwavering attention to landmark preservation, Portland has maintained an historic urban landscape with a modern sensibility. The city is replete with fascinating architecture and the means to delve into its past, with guided and self-guided tours of Portland’s historic neighborhoods. Although the area was settled in the 1600s, much of the city’s historic architecture is Victorian, built after the devastating Fourth-of-July fire of 1866 leveled most of the city. History is also kept alive with museum homes and maritime museums chronicling the emergence of the area from a trading and fishing settlement into one of the nation’s most active seaports.

WATERFRONT Jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay, this region offers some of the best water access to islands, lighthouses, beaches, and historic forts in Maine. Greater Portland is home to seven lighthouses, those silent testaments to Maine’s enduring connection to the sea and a favorite of photographers from around the world. On a stroll through the Old Port, one of the country’s most successful warehouse revitalization efforts, you’ll hear the squall of gulls and the low moan of bell buoys while you smell the salt brine that wafts off the bay. Portland’s waterfront is still very much a working port, an integral and thriving part of the local economy, which is one of the authentic aspects that visitors find so appealing. In Portland, you’re never far from the sea and its changeable influences. VISUAL ARTS Portland’s official Arts District runs along a stretch of Congress Street, but the city’s flourishing art scene knows no bounds. Traditional landscapes, which have been the foundation of Maine art, now share the limelight with cutting-edge contemporary work in a wide range of media. The venerable Portland Museum of Art, celebrating three centuries of art and architecture, is known as one of the best art museums in New England, and the Maine College of Art is a respected art school whose affilated

OUTDOOR RECREAT ION Casco Bay’s flourishing arts scene is complemented by an abundant variety of outdoor recreational pursuits so accessible that you can kayak, bike, golf, or swim all day and still have time to take in dinner and a show in the evening. Within 10 minutes of downtown Portland you can glide in a canoe through an Audubon estuary, swim at a state beach, bird watch on a nature sanctuary, and photograph Portland Head Light, the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Hike a wooded trail through autumn foliage to discover a hidden waterfall. Ice-skate in Deering Oaks Park or cross-country ski alongside the ocean in winter. Every season of the year offers its unique pleasures and Maine is lucky to have seasons that each delights the senses. CUISINE Visitors are now coming to Maine from around the world for its great food and fantastic restaurant scene, as much as for the unspoiled landscape and beautiful scenery that

Institute of Contemporary Art presents innovative works by influential national and international artists. On the first Friday of each month in Portland, and the third Friday in Freeport, artists open their studios to the public and you can take a self-guided tour. Follow the Maine Art Museum Trail to experience a magnificent array of works at the state’s seven leading art museums. PERFORMANCE ARTS Performance arts also energize the Greater Portland region year-round. The summer skies are filled with concerts and the Old Port comes to life at night with an eclectic mix of live music in its pubs and concert halls. Portland has its own symphony orchestra, choral arts society, professional theater and dance troupes, even a repertory opera com- pany. In Freeport, free outdoor concerts in Discovery Park offer an exciting musical evening. Greater Portland is the perfect combination of small-town intimacy with a heavy dose of large metropolitan culture.

AUTHENT IC ALLURE It’s all right here: great dining and shopping,

have long been the mainstay of the region’s appeal. Bon Appétit magazine once dubbed Portland “America’s Foodiest Small Town” in recognition of the excellence achieved by our chefs, restaurants, and food purveyors. We’re so proud of our food scene that we’ve created an event to celebrate and share it. Harvest on the Harbor, a multi-day culinary festival held each fall on Portland’s waterfront, draws foodies from near and far. FAMI LY FUN Greater Portland is fun for the whole family, so don’t leave the kids at home. They’ll love the hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum and a ride on an historic streetcar, steam train, or Model-T at one of the region’s transportation museums. Baseball, hockey, and basketball fans will find big-league entertainment at minor-league prices at one of Portland’s home-team games. From amusement parks to wildlife parks, agricultural fairs to folk-life festivals, there are so many things to entertain active kids of all ages.

hopping nightlife, outdoor recreation, historical and cultural attractions, and stunning natural beauty. Its small scale, accessible waterfront, Old World ambience, and youthful vibe have propelled Portland to the top of many national lists of best places to vacation. But you won’t have to give up the quintessential Maine coast to enjoy all that Greater Portland has to offer — islands, lighthouses, beaches, and surf crashing on the rocky shore are all in proximity of Portland’s vibrant, historic downtown. Authentic — BY NATURE Go 10 or 15 minutes in any direction and you'll doubt you're anywhere near Maine's largest metro area. Both surrounding and within Portland, parks and preserves allow access to the tranquil natural beauty that Maine is renowned for. Seascapes abound, from the sandy beaches of Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough to the leafy trail vistas of Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park in Freeport. Across the harbor from Portland, Bug Light Park offers an unimpeded view of the city's skyline and the harbor's many watercraft, while the granite breakwater at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse literally takes you out onto the bay. Altogether, seven lighthouses in Greater Portland offer their stately profiles to avid photographers. The region's best known landmark, Portland Head Light, sits majestically in Cape Elizabeth's Fort Williams Park, where surf crashes upon granite shores and open fields are per- fect for flying kites. Pack a lunch for the beach or stop by the Lobster Shack at Two Lights where your picnic table is close enough to the sea for the ocean to

tickle your senses. For an idyllic afternoon, hop on the ferry and bicycle around one of the islands, each an intimate neighbor of Portland yet a world away from the city's bustle. Pristine country and forest landscapes lie within striking distance of the city. From the top of Bradbury Mountain in Pownal you'll gaze over a carpet of au- tumn-hued trees and New England homesteads. Cross-country ski on the groomed trails at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, where some of the best local cheeses are crafted from cows that graze happily on hundreds of acres of pastoral grasslands. Discover native wildlife and plants as you navigate a canoe through the state's largest marsh in Scarborough. Tee off at a variety of beautiful courses open to visiting golfers, and pick apples, pumpkins, and berries at local farms. Wildlife watching has long been an interest of Maine visitors. In Portland you aren't likely to catch a glimpse of

North America's tallest land mammal, the moose, but you can get a close up look at bears, mountain lions, lynx, moose, and other species at Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. The park also has trails where you may encounter free-roaming wildlife. Bird watchers can grab binoculars and head for sanctuaries in Falmouth and Freeport or Baxter Woods right in Portland. Join Odyssey Whale Watch on an expedition to see the awe-inspiring denizens of the sea or charter your own onboard adventure with Casco Bay Custom Charters. With the ocean in its front yard and lakes, rivers, and mountains within easy reach, Portland is a city with an urban spirit complemented by a natural soul. Whether you're out for a day of shop- ping, visiting museums and galleries, or touring historic sites, you're never far from places of pure, scenic beauty; it's one of the reasons we call Portland "Authentic - By Nature."

City Fun, Island HOPPING No visit to Portland is complete without venturing out to one of the nearby Casco Bay Islands. Dine at a fine Portland restaurant, stay in a comfortable hotel, then get out onto the sparkling waters in a number of fun and affordable ways. Photo: Tim Greenway

The Casco Bay Lines ferry offers daily trips to seven of the nearby populated islands as well as sunset and moonlight cruises, and a sunrise cruise for early risers. Peaks Island, a commuter neighborhood of Maine’s largest city, is only 15 minutes away but feels like a world apart. Rent bicycles or kayaks, or simply take a leisurely stroll through the lovely town streets lined with gift shops, cafes, and ancient elm trees, which survived the blight due to their secluded island location. Visit the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum, built in 1888 as a memorial and reunion hall for veterans of the 5th Maine Regi- ment, and now maintained as a Civil War and local history museum. Top off the day with drinks or dinner at the Inn on Peaks Island, a stone’s throw from the ferry back to Portland. Chebeague, the largest of the Casco Bay islands, can be reached by a leisurely 1 ½

hour ferry ride from Portland or a 15 minute jaunt from nearby Yarmouth. The island contains many Greek Revival homes that were built by the “stone sloopers,” men whose ships carried granite for many of the nation’s most spectacular monuments and churches. Play a round of golf on the nine-hole golf course and have lunch at the Chebeague Island Inn, which offers great food and a spectacular panoramic porch view of the ocean. Looking for an authentic old-fashioned schooner sailing experience? You can enjoy sunset cruises on the bay provided by Maine Sailing Adventures and Portland Schooner Company, both located next to the ferry terminal. For a tasty and educational evening, join sommelier Erica Archer of Wine Wise who offers fine-wine experiences as part of some of the evening schooner excursions. Or take the ferry to Great Diamond Island for a romantic dinner at Diamond’s Edge.

And for a great family excursion, head up to South Freeport for a trip with Captain Tom Ring on Atlantic Seal Cruises, bound for nearby Eagle Island. Eagle Island was the summer home of Admiral Robert E. Peary, the first man to reach the North Pole. The magnificent home has ocean views on all sides, lovely indigenous flower gardens, and is filled with Peary’s belongings. Captain Tom will show you seals playing on nearby rock outcroppings and even pull a lobster trap or two on the way back. No matter which adventure you choose (and we suggest trying them all!), once back from the islands there is so much to do in Portland, including a visit to the Portland Museum of Art, which has assembled some of the best paintings frommany of Maine’s museums into one fabulous summer-long show. Art and culture has defined the identity of Maine ever since artists began visit- ing Monhegan Island and trekking up Mount Katahdin. This magnificent environment and the art it inspired has captured the public imagination for centuries, and to this day a growing number of visitors from around the world continue to affirm that Maine’s galleries, studios, and art museums are unlike any in the world. The Maine Art Museum Trail is comprised of seven leading museums offering a dazzling array of collections, from ancient to contemporary. Directors’ Cut: Selections from the Maine Art MuseumTrail lets us see these museums through the eyes of their directors, who have specially curated selections of Maine master- pieces from their respective museums’ collections. The artists and artworks presented in this exhibition embody quintessentially Maine ideals of fierce independence, innovation, and self- sufficiency, as well as a strength of character that is built from admiration and respect for the rugged and un- spoiled qualities of this land. This is the Maine that inspired Berenice Abbott, Marsden Hartley, Winslow Homer, John Marin, Louise

Nevelson, N.C. Wyeth, and Marguerite Zorach. This is the Maine that continues to inspire contemporary artists Ahmed Alsoudani, Lois Dodd, David Driskell, Lauren Fensterstock, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Richard Tuttle, and Jamie Wyeth. Directors’ Cut: Selections from the Maine Art MuseumTrail shares the rich cultural legacy of our state while providing a platform to highlight the visionary artists of our future. The world holds an enduring fascination with Maine, and the art displayed at this exhibit helps demonstrate why. If your visit doesn’t coincide with this special exhibition, you can make your own pilgrimage along the Maine Art Museum Trail Museum, exploring Maine’s spectacular coastline, countryside, and urban landscapes. The journey will take you from Port- land’s panoramic waterfront, to historic downtown Bangor, to Rockland and Ogunquit with their lively shops and galleries, to the campuses of Bowdoin, Bates, andColbyColleges. Eachmuseum community offers unique opportunities to discover shops, cafés, galleries, his- toric architecture, theatre, music, and other cultural attractions that make each destination a special pleasure.
