EXCURSIONS North of Portland
AUGUSTA (1 hr on the ME Turnpike) The state capitol, Augusta, is home to the Maine State Museum, featuring a collection of exhibits depicting the state’s natural envi- ronment, social history, and manufacturing heritage. BATH (40 min. on Rts. 95 & 1) Site of two state beaches, Popham and Reid, and home to the shipbuilding company, Bath Iron Works, Bath is an historic town nestled on the banks of the Kennebec River. BRUNSWICK (30 min. on Rts. 95 & 1) Now you can ride the train to Brunswick, the gateway to the state’s mid-coast region. Home to Bowdoin College which boasts an impressive art museum as well as the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum. YARMOUTH & NOVA SCOTIA (5 1/2 hrs. by The Cat ferry to Yarmouth or 8 hrs. by car to Nova Scotia entry) Travel 200 miles across the Atlantic and the Gulf of Maine to a charming, working, fishing port. From here you can explore the region’s Celtic and Acadian cultures, beaches and mountains. South of Portland KENNEBUNKPORT (30 min. on Rts. 95 & 1) Classic Maine village with Victorian-style mansions built by sea captains and merchants, Kennebunkport is home to the Seashore Trolley and Brick Store Museums. The town sparkles for two weeks in December during Christmas Prelude. KITTERY (1 hr. on Rts. 95 & 1) The “Gateway to Maine,” Kittery has become renowned for the excellent values to be had at its many factory outlet shops. OGUNQUIT (45 min. on Rts. 95 & 1) This picturesque village boarded by an active beach and quaint cove is popular as an artists’ retreat. YORK BEACH (1 hr. on Rt. 95) A long stretch of sandy beach surrounded by dunes and marshes. Investigate the many historic sites in nearby York Village. West of Portland BETHEL ( 1 1/2 hrs. on the ME Turnpike & Rt. 26) A picturesque New England haven for outdoor lovers in all seasons. THE FORKS (3 hrs. on Rts. 95 & 201) One of eastern North America’s foremost whitewater rafting areas. Site of Moxie Falls,
