WORKFORCE INITIATIVE

THE PURPOSE To strengthen Greater Portland’s hospitality workforce pipeline by building strategic partnerships , increasing awareness of career opportunities, supporting inclusive pathways into the industry, and providing access to information and training that help protect and empower the workforce. OUR STRATEGY Visit Portland collaborates with educational institutions, workforce organizations, and regional partners to promote hospitality careers through direct engagement, targeted outreach, and alignment with broader workforce initiatives and research—ensuring a more connected, informed, and sustainable talent pipeline.

OVERVIEW: Visit Portland is actively strengthening the region’s hospitality workforce through a coordinated approach that connects education, industry, and community partners. By engaging with local universities, adult education programs, and statewide tourism organizations, we are helping to align training with real-world career opportunities while expanding awareness of hospitality as a viable and rewarding profession. Our efforts range from providing direct student engagement and career preparation support to collaborating on regional workforce initiatives and sharing industry best practices—ensuring that Greater Portland’s tourism economy is supported by a well-prepared, informed, and connected workforce.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Visit Portland maintains active board

WORKFORCE COLLABORATION Visit Portland is actively collaborating with Workforce Portland to align regional workforce efforts. By bringing together adult education providers and industry partners, we are working to strengthen pathways to employment across Greater Portland. STATEWIDE ALIGNMENT We work in close partnership with Maine Tourism Association, HospitalityMaine, and the Maine Office of Tourism to stay aligned with statewide workforce initiatives. Insights from recent workforce research and career awareness campaigns are shared with local businesses to

representation with the University of Southern Maine Tourism & Hospitality Program and the University of Maine Tourism, Hospitality, and Outdoor Recreation program. This involvement allows us to help shape curriculum and ensure students are prepared for immediate entry into the workforce. EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS We are expanding partnerships with local education providers, including supporting South Portland Adult Education through mock interviews to prepare ESL students for employment. Additional outreach to organizations such as the Junior League and high school guidance counselors is currently underway.
