Downs & St. Germain conducted a Resident Perception Study with 616 respondents from across Greater Portland to better understand how residents view their community and tourism’s role. The findings revealed a strong sense of pride in the region, with residents citing outdoor recreation, exceptional dining, local events, and the unique combination of urban amenities and natural beauty as key attributes that distinguish Greater Portland. Many noted that friends and family are often surprised by the breadth of experiences available in the area. Residents also expressed a welcoming attitude toward visitors, recognizing the important role tourism plays in supporting the local economy, sustaining the businesses they enjoy, and contributing to the community’s vibrancy. At the same time, respondents acknowledged that tourism can affect congestion and costs, reflecting an understanding of both the benefits and challenges of a thriving visitor economy. KEY FINDINGS • Greater Portland’s residents value its outdoor spaces, culinary offerings, and local events. • Both Greater Portland’s urban and natural features contribute to its uniqueness among other destinations in the Northeast – and many of the features that make the area unique align with what residents enjoy doing. • Residents report that visitors to Greater Portland are struck by what the area has to offer and calmed by its welcoming, relaxing atmosphere. They say it feels like coming home. • Greater Portland is full of personality, defined by its beauty, history, and atmosphere – and, of course, its food. • Residents value providing a welcoming atmosphere to visitors. • Greater Portland residents understand that tourism benefits their community, though they also see drawbacks.
