Downs & St. Germain conducted a Market Perception Study with 612 survey respondents from across the U.S. The survey revealed that the Greater Portland area is appealing to travelers, but unfamiliar to many. Its features tend to blend with those of New England, so its rocky coastline, seafood, and outdoor activities define it. While these are important draws, to the more familiar traveler, the Greater Portland area stands out as a welcoming community, an eclectic foodie destination, and a small town with big-city amenities. Despite these attractions, those who have not visited the area often assume they would prefer other places. If more of them recognized how much the Greater Portland area offers beyond the familiar New England image, they would find it a more compelling destination. KEY FINDINGS • Greater Portland has high name recognition but still has room to grow deeper awareness and familiarity in travelers. • Perceptions of the Greater Portland area are mostly positive. • A preference for other destinations and lack of knowledge are the most common barriers to visiting Greater Portland. This represents an educational opportunity. • Travelers perceive the Greater Portland area’s uniqueness to be mainly based on its natural beauty, mountains and coastline, and seafood-rich culinary scene. • Previous visitors to the area felt positive feelings when visiting Greater Portland. • Greater Portland’s personality is overwhelmingly positive and can be defined by its strong coastal charm.
