SPORTS.
From the mountains to the sea, Maine sports venues have played host to youth, amateur, national, international, university-level, and professional-level sports. Recently Maine hosted “Tough Mudder,” an event of 15,000 extreme competitors, and we’re excited to welcome bowling enthusiasts from around the country to the three-day Professional Bowlers Association league championship tournament in 2015. Welcome to Maine . Maine and sports—it’s a natural fit. With its diversity of terrain and changing climate, Maine is a destination fortunate to have an array of distinct, unique four-season sports activities. Maine has the space to hold large competitions and the services to ensure they run smoothly. From marathons & triathlons, to cycling and golf, to motor sports, sailing regattas and much more, the state’s natural resources allow for the widest range of sporting events. While visiting, your delegates may want to catch one of the region’s semi-pro teams in a home game. Consider taking a family member or corporate client to cheer on the Red Claws, Portland’s basketball affiliate of the Boston Celtics. Or bring a group to the bleachers of Hadlock Field to take in a Portland Sea Dogs game and watch the Red Sox AA affiliate as they “play ball!” Greater Portland is geared up for the excitement of organized sports and our convention team is eager to help you navigate the logistics of hosting a major league event in Maine. From skiing and skating, to dance and cheerleading competitions, to field sports – even beach volleyball – Maine has the resources to make your sporting event a slam dunk. “ Maine is a very attractive destination to show- case the best bowlers in the world and we are pleased by the interest of Maine businesses to bring the PBA here.” — Tom Clark, PBA Commissioner

WATERFRONT CI T Y.
Seascapes and cityscapes blend harmoniously in Portland, perched on a peninsula, jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay. The metropolitan hub of Maine’s south coast region, Portland is a lively city that incorporates an historic atmosphere into a modern, urban environment. Welcome to Maine. Older architecture blends gracefully with the new as you stroll along the working waterfront or the cobblestone streets of the Old Port section of town. Portland is easy to navigate by foot, taxi or bus. Small parks and squares dot the landscape, offering comfortable respite for urban explorers. Intriguing shops and cozy coffee and teahouses beckon to passersby. Harbor cruises, trolley and architectural walking tours, as well as a wealth of galleries, are within easy reach, nestled along the waterfront. On a stroll through the Old Port, one of the country’s more successful warehouse revitalization efforts, you’ll hear the squall of gulls and the low moan of bell buoys as you watch fishermen unloading their daily catch. Portland’s waterfront is still very much a working port, an integral and thriving part of the local economy. Underlying the latest tech, fashion, and culinary scene is a natural authenticity and a deep sense of continuity. With sophisticated style and artistic sensibilities, Portland is never-the-less unpretentious and welcoming. Maine’s largest city has been steadily gaining a national reputation for its innovative restaurants and award-winning chefs. Join us in October for Harvest on the Harbor, a four-day waterfront festival celebrating the fantastic food, wine, products, and creative preparation that contribute to the state’s culinary renown. Experience seminars and demonstrations, wine, beer and spirit tastings, and a culinary marketplace, all with a backdrop of ferries, gulls, and salty sea breezes. harvestontheharbor.com

our sights and attractions. Welcome to Maine.
Portland, the cultural hub of northern New England, is home to professional theater and dance troupes, a fabulous art museum, and its own opera company and symphony orchestra. Historic homes and maritime museums honor the past’s legacy and bestow an appreciation for how a long and fruitful association with the sea continues to shape the region today. The region’s culinary scene is also bustling. The national press has caught on to the fact that you can’t walk down the street in Portland without bumping into several ways to treat your taste buds. Maine lobster continues to have a devoted following and a lobster and clambake with all the fixings, on the beach or other setting, can add that extra excitement that your delegates will long be talking about. In addition to the freshest of seafood, a smorgasbord of culinary tastes is on offer in a wide variety of casual to elegant venues. Greater Portland’s microbrew movement is also thriving; locally brewed beer is served at most restaurants and pubs, and tour companies will drive you to sample drinks from Maine’s local breweries, distilleries, and wineries. Overall the meeting was a huge success. We had record-breaking attendance and everyone was thrilled to be in Portland. The weather was absolutely perfect. Thanks for your help with all of my needs!” — Lori Harrison, Council of State Retail Associations “

SEASONS.
New England is blessed to have four seasons that each bring their own distinct pleasures. The clear, crisp days of autumn give way to winter’s frosty elegance while spring’s thaw is accompanied by new growth and brilliant floral hues. Summer is chock-a-block full of activities and also a time to unwind by the lake or on the beach, cooled by a salty sea breeze. Welcome to Maine. Your delegates will want to take advantage of the seasonal flavors on tap when they’re here. Curling up by a winter’s fire, rafting during a spring high-water release, picking apples, sailing on the bay—there’s always something special to do to make the most of the time you’ve chosen to meet in Maine. Throughout the summer, the skies fill with the sounds of out- door concerts. A host of annual festivals celebrate everything from Maine performers and artisans, to the bounty of autumn’s harvest, to the delights of winter. If the family is along, there’s plenty to keep children actively entertained: baseball, hockey and basketball games, a children’s museum and planetarium, ice-skating and rollerblading, parks and wildlife. Maine is a safe and comfortable destination where delegates often combine a family vacation with business travel. If you are looking to mix pleasure with business, hold your next meeting in Maine. You may run out of time, but never things to do. Our members were delighted at the prospect of visiting Portland for the association’s annual conference – attendance was more than 30% higher than the typical meeting! The Portland CVB provided excellent planning support to our team, and worked with local businesses to prepare for our group’s week in Portland.” - Dave Beebe, National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

Or let your delegates discover their own adventure; just knowing what’s available to them is likely to make them more eager to attend your event.
