ARCHI TECTURE With unwavering attention to landmark preservation, Portland has maintained an historic urban landscape with a modern sensibility. The city is replete with fascinating architecture and the means to delve into its past, with guided and self-guided tours of Portland’s historic neighborhoods. Although the area was settled in the 1600s, much of the city’s historic architecture is Victorian, built after the devastating Fourth-of-July fire of 1866 leveled most of the city. History is also kept alive with museum homes and maritime museums chronicling the emergence of the area from a trading and fishing settlement into one of the nation’s most active seaports.

WATERFRONT Jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay, this region offers some of the best water access to islands, lighthouses, beaches, and historic forts in Maine. Greater Portland is home to seven lighthouses, those silent testaments to Maine’s enduring connection to the sea and a favorite of photographers from around the world. On a stroll through the Old Port, one of the country’s most successful warehouse revitalization efforts, you’ll hear the squall of gulls and the low moan of bell buoys while you smell the salt brine that wafts off the bay. On the first Friday of each month in Portland, and the third Friday in Freeport, artists open their studios to the public and you can take a self-guided tour. Follow the Maine Art Museum Trail to experience a magnificent array of works at the state’s seven leading art museums. PERFORMANCE ARTS Performance arts also energize the Greater Portland region year-round. The summer skies are filled with concerts and the Old Port comes to life at night with an eclectic mix of live music in its pubs and concert halls. FACTS POPULATION: With a population of 234,000, the Greater Portland area is home to almost one quarter of Maine’s total population. The population of the city of Portland is 66,300. CLIMATE: The sea tempers Portland’s climate, giving the coast milder winters and cool summer breezes. Both surrounding and within Portland, parks and preserves allow access to the tranquil natural beauty that Maine is renowned for. Seascapes abound, from the sandy beaches of Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough to the leafy trail vistas of Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park in Freeport. The Portland art scene rivals that of cities much larger in size and features the world-renowned Portland Museum of Art, a resident symphony orchestra, numerous art galleries, and professional theatre. The Casco Bay Lines ferry offers daily trips to seven of the nearby populated islands as well as sunset and moonlight cruises, and a sunrise cruise for early risers. Peaks Island, a commuter neighborhood of Maine’s largest city, is only 15 minutes away but feels like a world apart. Rent bicycles or kayaks, or simply take a leisurely stroll through the lovely town streets lined with gift shops, cafes, and ancient elm trees, which survived the blight due to their secluded island location. Visit the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum, built in 1888 as a memorial and reunion hall for veterans of the 5th Maine Regi- ment, and now maintained as a Civil War and local history museum. Top off the day with drinks or dinner at the Inn on Peaks Island, a stone’s throw from the ferry back to Portland. Chebeague, the largest of the Casco Bay islands, can be reached by a leisurely 1 ½

hour ferry ride from Portland or a 15 minute jaunt from nearby Yarmouth. The island contains many Greek Revival homes that were built by the “stone sloopers,” men whose ships carried granite for many of the nation’s most spectacular monuments and churches. Play a round of golf on the nine-hole golf course and have lunch at the Chebeague Island Inn, which offers great food and a spectacular panoramic porch view of the ocean. Looking for an authentic old-fashioned schooner sailing experience? You can enjoy sunset cruises on the bay provided by Maine Sailing Adventures and Portland Schooner Company, both located next to the ferry terminal. For a tasty and educational evening, join sommelier Erica Archer of Wine Wise who offers fine-wine experiences as part of some of the evening schooner excursions. Or take the ferry to Great Diamond Island for a romantic dinner at Diamond’s Edge.

And for a great family excursion, head up to South Freeport for a trip with Captain Tom Ring on Atlantic Seal Cruises, bound for nearby Eagle Island. Eagle Island was the summer home of Admiral Robert E. Peary, the first man to reach the North Pole. The magnificent home has ocean views on all sides, lovely indigenous flower gardens, and is filled with Peary’s belongings. Art and culture has defined the identity of Maine ever since artists began visit- ing Monhegan Island and trekking up Mount Katahdin. This magnificent environment and the art it inspired has captured the public imagination for centuries, and to this day a growing number of visitors from around the world continue to affirm that Maine’s galleries, studios, and art museums are unlike any in the world. The Maine Art Museum Trail is comprised of seven leading museums offering a dazzling array of collections, from ancient to contemporary. Directors’ Cut: Selections from the Maine Art MuseumTrail lets us see these museums through the eyes of their directors, who have specially curated selections of Maine master- pieces from their respective museums’ collections. The artists and artworks presented in this exhibition embody quintessentially Maine ideals of fierce independence, innovation, and self- sufficiency, as well as a strength of character that is built from admiration and respect for the rugged and un- spoiled qualities of this land. This is the Maine that inspired Berenice Abbott, Marsden Hartley, Winslow Homer, John Marin, Louise

Nevelson, N.C. Wyeth, and Marguerite Zorach. This is the Maine that continues to inspire contemporary artists Ahmed Alsoudani, Lois Dodd, David Driskell, Lauren Fensterstock, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Richard Tuttle, and Jamie Wyeth. Directors’ Cut: Selections from the Maine Art MuseumTrail shares the rich cultural legacy of our state while providing a platform to highlight the visionary artists of our future. The world holds an enduring fascination with Maine, and the art displayed at this exhibit helps demonstrate why. If your visit doesn’t coincide with this special exhibition, you can make your own pilgrimage along the Maine Art Museum Trail Museum, exploring Maine’s spectacular coastline, countryside, and urban landscapes.
