Here’s a list of top things to do in Greater Portland that won’t cost you a penny.

ART & ABOUT On the first Friday of each month, Portland art galleries and the art museum open their doors, and Congress Street is lined with local performers and artists. SEAS THE DAY Take a dip or bring your kayak to East End Beach on the Portland peninsula or at Willard Beach in South Portland. Take a day trip to Old Orchard Beach and the Pier or to the sprawling shores of Ogunquit beach. TAKE A HIKE Over 70 miles of trails in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Scarborough, and Falmouth offer a variety of settings from woodland escapes to waterfront walks. LEAD YOURSELF Immerse yourself in architecture and history with self-guided walking tours of four Portland neighborhoods by downloading the interactive maps from greaterportlandlandmarks.org . GO FLY A KITE With boundless lawns and a light water­ front breeze, Bug Light Park in South Portland, Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, and Pine Point in Scarborough are ideal for a soaring good time.

STARS UNDER THE STARS From July to September, L.L.Bean presents national headliner acts and local favorites at Discovery Park in downtown Freeport. FLAMING INTEREST The West End’s Portland Fire Museum is filled with artifacts preserving the history of our local firefighters. A WALK IN THE PARK Deering Oaks and Payson Park both feature playgrounds. Deering Oaks also boasts rose gardens and a duck pond. LITERARY LONGINGS Word Portland hosts a reading of talented local writers and poets on the first Monday of every month. SUMMER FILM FLING Enjoy free films outdoors at Congress Square Park on Sunday evenings in July and August or at Bug Light Park on Thursday evenings in July. GO UNDERGROUND Find all 16 markers of the Portland Freedom Trail to learn about the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movement in Maine.
