SUSTAINABLE MAINE LEADING RENEWABLE ENERGY + SUSTAINABILITY Maine is addressing climate change by expanding clean energy, enhancing infrastructure, and creating sustainable jobs.
CLEAN ENERGY Maine is working toward 80% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050. Communities like Falmouth, Cumberland, and Yarmouth are leading local efforts, adopting climate action plans that promote renewable energy and energy-efficient buildings. Solar arrays are being installed on municipal buildings, and net-zero construction standards are expanding across multiple towns. GREEN TRANSIT Maine is growing its EV infrastructure while towns like Cumberland and Westbrook prioritize sustainable transportation. Greater Portland’s bus fleets will be fully electric by 2040, and many communities are expanding bike lanes, improving pedestrian access, and supporting transit-oriented development to reduce emissions and congestion. ENERGY SAVINGS Governor Mills’ goal of 100,000 heat pumps by 2025 is driving local action, with towns like Scarborough and Freeport implementing energy benchmarking and incentives for efficiency upgrades. Falmouth and Yarmouth promote composting and waste reduction, while Gorham is focusing on long-term fiscal sustainability in energy planning. LAND & CLIMATE Maine has invested $40 million in conservation through the Land for Maine’s Future program. Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough are improving stormwater management with green infrastructure, while Cumberland is expanding tree canopies and restoring natural landscapes to boost climate resilience.
POLLUTION CONTROL A $30 million initiative is addressing PFAS contamination statewide. Freeport, Yarmouth, and other towns are expanding composting programs, cutting single-use plastics, and prioritizing environmental health to ensure clean air and water access for all residents. GREENER COMMUNITIES Maine is strengthening climate resilience through infrastructure upgrades and community initiatives. Coastal towns are enhancing waterfront protections, while Scarborough and Gorham are designing more sustainable stormwater systems. Westbrook’s environmental programs focus on conservation and restoration. Pownal is exploring new sustainability initiatives. GREEN JOBS Maine aims to double clean energy jobs by 2030. Falmouth, Freeport, and Yarmouth are fostering workforce training in renewable energy, green building, and climate adaptation programs. These initiatives ensure communities are well-prepared for a sustainable future while creating economic opportunities. SUSTAINABLE GOALS Maine is building a cleaner, more resilient future through renewable energy, green transit, conservation, and workforce training. With strong community action and investment, the state is ensuring environmental and economic sustainability for generations to come.
