DISCOVER GREATER PORTLAND OUR NEIGHBORHOODS + TOWNS Greater Portland is a collection of unique coastal spots, quiet wooded trails, and busy town centers. While Portland is the hub, the surrounding towns each have their own vibe and rhythm. Whether you’re looking for rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, or a classic Maine village green, you’ll find it just a short drive from the city.

CAPE ELIZABETH Cape Elizabeth is all about the dramatic Maine coast. It’s home to the iconic Portland Head Light —the most photographed lighthouse in America—and sprawling state parks like Fort Williams and Two Lights . You’ll find great cliff-side hiking, hidden coves, and some of the best

NORTH YARMOUTH Just a few miles inland, North Yarmouth is a quiet community where life moves a little slower. It’s a landscape of orchards, tree farms, and winding country roads. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find community concerts on the village green and a strong, welcoming local spirit. PORTLAND The heart of the region sits on a peninsula in Casco Bay . Portland is a working waterfront city where cobblestone streets meet modern galleries and award-winning restaurants. You can watch the fishing boats come in, hop a ferry to the islands, or just wander the neighborhoods of the East and West End for some of the best bay views in New England. POWNAL Pownal is a rural gem best known for Bradbury Mountain State Park . It’s one of the best spots in the region for a quick hike that yields a massive reward—the summit offers incredible views of the Maine woods and the coast. It’s also a top destination for mountain bikers and birdwatchers. SCARBOROUGH Scarborough gives you the best of both worlds: wide, sandy beaches and the massive Scarborough Marsh . You can spend the morning surfing the swells at Higgins Beach and the afternoon kayaking through the state’s largest salt marsh to spot migratory birds and local wildlife. SOUTH PORTLAND Located just across the bridge from Portland, “SoPo” offers a different perspective on the harbor. You’ll find the picturesque Bug Light Park , the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse , and miles of the Greenbelt Walkway . Willard Beach is a local favorite for a casual stroll or a swim.

WESTBROOK Westbrook is a revitalized mill town built around the Presumpscot River . The river is the centerpiece of the community, offering great spots for kayaking, paddleboarding, and walking along the falls. The downtown area is buzzing with new energy, creative spaces, and easy access to forested nature preserves. YARMOUTH Yarmouth is a classic coastal town centered around the Royal River . It’s famous for the annual Yarmouth Clam Festival, which draws huge crowds every July. When things are quieter, the town offers beautiful parks, a sheltered harbor, and easy access to some of the most peaceful beaches in the region.

ocean views in the state. CUMBERLAND Cumberland offers a perfect mix of

farmland and shoreline. It’s a great spot for walking wooded trails or exploring quiet tidal coves. If you’re visiting in the fall, the Cumberland County Fair is a must-see tradition that celebrates the town’s deep agricultural roots. FALMOUTH Falmouth blends a quiet, upscale feel with beautiful natural escapes. The town is known for its sheltered harbors full of sailboats and scenic inlets. A local favorite is Mackworth Island , where a wooded trail encircles the entire island, offering panoramic views of Casco Bay just minutes from the mainland. FREEPORT Most people know Freeport as a world-class shopping destination and the home of L.L.Bean , but there’s plenty of adventure beyond the outlets. You can explore the trails at Wolfe’s Neck Center , or enjoy the town’s famous seasonal festivals and holiday lights. GORHAM Gorham is a busy college town with a relaxed, pastoral feel. It’s got a great village center with local shops and historic architecture, but it’s also surrounded by rolling hills and riverbanks that are perfect for a quiet afternoon of exploring or paddling.

Iconic Maine Lobster: Enjoy a memorable lobster dinner or lobster roll with a view. It’s wonderful year-round, but especially satisfying in winter, when snowy scenes outside the window make every bite feel even more comforting. Global + Diverse Flavors: Greater Portland’s food scene goes beyond seafood with memorable international eats. Enjoy vibrant tacos and margaritas at Mesa Grande Taqueria , bold plant-forward dishes at Green Elephant Vegetarian Bistro , or globally inspired plates at Evo . EXPLORE GREATER PORTLAND’S PAST UNCOVERING THE STORIES BEHIND HISTORIC SITES Greater Portland, Maine invites visitors to step into a living history shaped by the sea, resilience, and generations of people who built, defended, and reimagined this coastal city. From Native American roots and colonial settlements to maritime innovation, abolitionist movements, and artistic revival, Portland’s past is woven into cobblestone streets, working waterfronts, parks, and neighborhoods overlooking Casco Bay.

FROM MACHIGONNE TO MODERN PORTLAND Long before it was called Portland, the peninsula was Machigonne—“Great Neck”— home to Native peoples drawn to its natural harbor. English settlers arrived in 1632, and the town evolved through conflict, fire, and renewal, serving as Maine’s state capital from 1820 until 1832, after which the capital was moved to Augusta. Today, visitors can trace this history through preserved architecture, trails, and landmarks that tell stories of survival, commerce, and community. MARITIME ROOTS + COASTAL DEFENSES Portland’s identity is tied to the water. Lighthouses, forts, and signal towers reflect centuries of seafaring life and coastal defense. Portland Head Light , Maine’s oldest lighthouse, stands sentinel over Casco Bay at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. Nearby visitors can enjoy a sweet treat at Willard Scoops . The Museum at Portland Head Light chronicles the lighthouse’s role in navigation and regional history. Historic forts across the harbor reveal Portland’s wartime significance: Fort Preble guarded the harbor, Fort Scammel sits on House Island , and Fort Gorges —visible from the Eastern Promenade —speaks to 19th-century military strategy. The Portland Observatory , the nation’s only remaining maritime signal tower, offers sweeping views and insight into historic ship guidance.

THE OLD PORT + A CITY REBUILT

BEYOND PORTLAND Nearby, history comes alive at Bath’s Maine Maritime Museum , Kennebunkport’s Seashore Trolley Museum , and Arundel’s Maine Classic Car Museum —offering hands-on glimpses into shipbuilding, antique transit, and vintage automobiles. A LIVING HISTORY EXPERIENCE Exploring Greater Portland is more than visiting sites—it’s engaging with stories that shape the region today. From walking historic sites to touring lighthouses and preserved mansions, visitors encounter a city deeply connected to its roots and proudly preserving them. Here, history is not just remembered—it is experienced, one story, one step, and one shoreline at a time.

The Old Port marks Portland’s original settlement and commercial waterfront. After the Great Fire of 1866, the city rebuilt in brick and Victorian style, reflecting resilience and architectural heritage. Nearby, the U.S. Customs House , Portland City Hall , and the Western Promenade showcase civic and residential grandeur from Portland’s growth years. FREEDOM, JUSTICE + COMMUNITY The Portland Freedom Trail highlights the city’s role in the Underground Railroad. Portland served as a key stop for those escaping slavery on their way to Canada. The Abyssinian Meeting House , the third-oldest African American meeting house in the U.S., was a center for worship, education, and abolitionist organizing. Guided tours illuminate the enduring impact of Portland’s Black community. HISTORIC PARKS + CULTURAL TREASURES Deering Oaks Park and the Eastern Promenade offer scenic reflections on history, while historic homes and museums—including Victoria Mansion and the Maine Historical Society —bring Maine’s past to life. Families can explore hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine , learn about transportation at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum , take a self-guided tour with Stepping Out to learn about Maine’s queer history, or join a Spirits Alive Eastern Cemetery tour. You can also take free guided tours of historic Western Cemetery , offering stories and insight into Portland’s historic past.
