It’s the kind of place where you’ll find community concerts on the village green and a strong, welcoming local spirit. PORTLAND The heart of the region sits on a peninsula in Casco Bay . Portland is a working waterfront city where cobblestone streets meet modern galleries and award-winning restaurants. You can watch the fishing boats come in, hop a ferry to the islands, or just wander the neighborhoods of the East and West End for some of the best bay views in New England. POWNAL Pownal is a rural gem best known for Bradbury Mountain State Park . It’s one of the best spots in the region for a quick hike that yields a massive reward—the summit offers incredible views of the Maine woods and the coast. It’s also a top destination for mountain bikers and birdwatchers. SCARBOROUGH Scarborough gives you the best of both worlds: wide, sandy beaches and the massive Scarborough Marsh . You can spend the morning surfing the swells at Higgins Beach and the afternoon kayaking through the state’s largest salt marsh to spot migratory birds and local wildlife. SOUTH PORTLAND Located just across the bridge from Portland, “SoPo” offers a different perspective on the harbor. You’ll find the picturesque Bug Light Park , the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse , and miles of the Greenbelt Walkway . Willard Beach is a local favorite for a casual stroll or a swim.
