...The smell of baked goods floats out on the street. Portland, Maine ( the superior of the two Portlands ) is also home to the best donuts I have ever eaten. The donuts are made out of Maine potatoes ( pomegranate, local blueberry, and lemon are my favorite ) . But enough about that. “Let’s just talk about the fact that Portland is in Maine. Seriously, have you been there?

If not, you’re missing out. Lighthouses, lobster, blueberries for days, lobster, cool weather in the summer, lobster, killer sunsets and also lobster. And don’t get me started on the beaches. You’ll never get me to stop. “Crashing waves, salty sea spray and pearly white sand. What’s not to love about Maine? Still not convinced ? Well, did I mention the lobster ? POPULATION Portland: 66,300 Maine's largest and most diverse city, with over 60 languages spoken. Greater Portland: population of 270,000 (one-fifth of Maine’s total population). CLIMATE Greater Portland's coastal climate provides milder temperatures in winter and summer than inland regions. Spring: Average 45° - 60° F. Summer: Average temp is 68° - 82° F but can reach into the 90s F. Autumn: Average 60°- 70° F but can get cooler—be sure to pack a fleece. Winter: Average 20°- 30° F but can get below 0° and into the 50s. SNOW Total average snowfall ranges between 60-90 inches per year, with only 18 days a winter when snowfall is more than 1 inch. Spring + Autumn: Rain jackets and sweaters/ fleeces are advisable.

Winter: Boots (especially L.L.Bean!), flannel shirts, ski + snowboard winter jackets are always in style. While dress is often casual throughout the region, cocktail dresses and top coats are not uncommon for a night on the town. SMOKING TOBACCO: In Maine, public settings indoor and outdoor are smoke-free, including parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, beaches, and open spaces. While 18 is the legal smoking age, patrons in many towns, including Portland, must be 21 to purchase tobacco products. Throwing tobacco litter on the ground is prohibited and results in a $100 fine. [smokefree.portlandmaine.gov] MARIJUANA: In 2017, recreational use of marijuana became legal, however, smokers have to be at least 21 years old, and it is prohibited to smoke in public. TASTE THE TOWN It’s easy to see why Bon Appétit named Portland the 2018 Restaurant City of the Year—from the tried and true favorites to the newest sensations, the sheer number of restaurants and their crazy-good offerings have planted this region firmly on the culinary map. Maine has an abundance of authentic ingredients: fishermen haul fresh lobster and seafood to the docks every day, and organic farms and dairies support year-round farmers’ markets with locally raised meats and vegetables bursting with flavor. Enjoy views of Casco Bay from restaurants that line the harbor or soak up the ambiance of venues tucked away inside beautifully restored historic buildings. COAST BY Whether you are drawn to crashing surf on dramatic cliffs, lured by the lapping waves of expansive beaches, or hypnotized by the quiet tides of salt marshes, getting on or around the sea is a must in Greater Portland. Enjoy the ocean from land while dining at waterfront lobster shacks and restaurants, swimming in a cove, strolling along scenic oceanside trails, even reading a book from the comfort of a hotel balcony, beach, or deck with a moaning fog horn in the back- ground. For a sea change in excitement, get out on the water for sailing, fishing, kayaking, whale watching, or island hopping. UNCOVER THE PAST Portland, with a consistent attention to landmark preservation, has kept a down- to-earth charm and wears its history openly. Five centuries of historical impact have shaped Portland and surrounding towns into a vibrant destination with deep-planted roots, from the Colonial-era through the wealth and opulence of the industrial age. Museum homes and maritime museums chronicle the emergence of the region from a trading and fishing settlement into one of the nation’s most active seaports. The region’s micro-size allows for ease of travel and ability to explore a surprising variety of local craft drinks in one outing. TEAM UP Professional sports feature prominently with three minor league teams blazing a trail on their way to the majors. Anytime you visit Greater Portland you’re likely to catch some action on our home turf. The Portland Sea Dogs (AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) dish out family-friendly entertainment April to September at Hadlock Field. Then the Maine Red Claws (Boston Celtics) take the court from November to March at Cross Insurance Areana. The Maine Mariners take their sticks to the ice October through April. The Professional Bowlers Association takes over Bayside Bowl’s state-of-the-art lanes for playoffs and two international tournaments in April, June, and July. (More on page 28)

BE BUOYANT Let the breeze set you free, as you explore Casco Bay by sea. Guided tours venture out to explore the islands and forts in Portland Harbor on kayaks or paddle boards. You can charter a sailboat or head out on a whale watching adventure with an experienced naturalist. Tour boats leave Portland’s waterfront to behold lighthouses from a sailor’s perspective, glide alongside seals relaxing on sun- soaked rocks, or dance on a festive party boat under the evening stars. Experience a working boat and haul sails or lobster traps with the crew. Or relax and take in the surrounding sea while enjoying food and wine pairings, or island hopping on America’s longest operating mailboat. (More on pages 22-24, 41)

GET CULTURED Arts in Greater Portland is bolstered by a thriving creative economy, supporting Broadway-level theatre, Opera Maine, two ballet companies, Portland Symphony Orchestra, a Bach Festival, a Chamber Music Festival, and several theater and improv companies. Dozens of galleries and studios fill out Portland’s robust Arts District, bookended by the popular One Longfellow Square performance space in the West End, and anchored by the Portland Museum of Art in Congress Square. STIR IT UP Maine’s largest metro area has lots of exciting activities to get the party started– or keep one going. Fine dining amid the region’s celebrated culinary scene is a great way to begin (multi-course menus are on tap throughout the region). Then move on to a variety of venues, from small performing arts spaces, to grand concert halls, to theaters offering arts experiences from traditional to avant-garde. Those craving a specialty cocktail, a pounding night on the dance floor, or quiet, romantic banter can choose from dozens of area nightclubs, bars, and music halls. SEE WHAT BEACONS No less than six lighthouses line Portland Harbor to protect incoming ships from the area’s famously rocky coast. The iconic beacons of Greater Portland are each unique representations of nautical history. Rising early or sleeping in, continue the culinary exploration with farm- fresh food to start your day—and if it includes lobster, all the better! Pair award-winning coffee, spicy Bloody Marys, or craft brews with innovative, locally-sourced cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere (and maybe even an ocean view). [p. 37-40] Choose a path, and make sure its less traveled! Hop a ferry to one of Casco Bay’s harbor islands and bike, hike, or swim and discover hidden coves and forgotten forts. Meander along over 70 miles of Portland Trails, through leafy woods, historic cemeteries, rocky shores, peaceful salt marshes, and quiet city streets. Secret beaches and tiny islands can be reached by kayak or private craft. Sometimes the least expected things to do are the most rewarding, such as tapping into a creative interest at cool art museums on a hot summer day, snow shoeing on golf courses in the winter, kayaking a lazy river on a full-moon night, hiking a mountain when everyone’s swimming at the shore, or hiking to a waterfall in the center of Maine’s largest city. 200: A STATE’S ODYSSEY Get ahead of the crowds—make a Maine journey to uncover the past part of your plans this year. J ust 200 years ago, Maine belonged to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but was itching to be treated like an independent state of its own. The opportunity presented itself when Missouri also lobbied to become a state. As happens withmany sibling rivalries, the parent country, wanting to keep the peace, agreed to grant state- hood to both. And the rest, as they say, is history. A couple of centuries later, onMarch 15, 2019, Maine is celebrating the start of its 200th year, with theMaine Bicentennial to be officially recognized in 2020. The formation of Greater Portland predates statehood by more than a century. Maine’s maritime value was quickly noticed, with Portland Harbor boasting one of the world’s most advantageous seaports. When the British came calling to destroy colonial seaports, Portland was burned to the ground, an outrage called out in the Declaration of Independence. A cannonball from that attack is embedded in the chandelier of the First Parish Church on Commercial Street; the Tate House, in historic Stroudwater, is the only remaining home from that era open to the public. Following the Revolution, one of President GeorgeWashington’s early acts was approving construction of Portland Head Light in 1787. Twenty years later, the Portland Observatory, a maritime signal tower designed to let ship owners knowwhen their merchant vessels were approaching, rose even higher atopMunjoy Hill. WhenMaine was freed fromMassachusetts’ control in 1820, the state capital was seated in Portland’s Monument Square for the first 12 years, until Augusta was selected as the new capital. The 19th-century VictoriaMansion, built just before the Civil War, is spectacular, showcasing the architecture and opulence of the time. The Great Fire on July 4, 1866 started with a post-war July Fourth celebration, which—once again—destroyed most of Portland. Swiftly rebuilding from the ashes, the city adapted the combustible—but ultimately indestructible—Phoenix as Portland’s icon. Over the following decades, Portland has become an arts, culture, and culinary destination. The Bicentennial party has started! Don’t wait another century to help us blow out the candles.
