URBAN SP IRI T, NATURAL SOUL Go 10 or 15 minutes in any direction and you’ll be surprised you’re anywhere near Maine’s largest metro area. Set like a jewel in the crown of Casco Bay, Portland is unique in its position as a major cultural center that equally embraces its natural environment. Welcome to the Greater Portland Casco Bay Region.

AUTHENT IC - BY NATURE Our hip metropolis, created from the still-planted roots of a prominent fishing industry and working waterfront, offers a natural authenticity unlike that of most urban centers. Despite its popularity as a visitor destination, ours is an inherently real place with real people going about their business, surounded by the incredible natural beauty of our forests, fields, and waterways. With its heady mixture of artistic and outdoor adventure, our region is stylish and sophisticated, yet remains genuine and unpretentious, a place where grey flannel and plaid flannel coexist companionably. And underlying the latest tech, fashion, and culinary scene is a deep sense of continuity. We invite you to experience the character of a region that blends the present with a very special past. ARCHI TECTURE With unwavering attention to landmark preservation, Portland has maintained an historic urban landscape with a modern sensibility. The city is replete with fascinating architecture and the means to delve into its past, with guided and self-guided tours of Portland’s historic neighborhoods. Although the area was settled in the 1600s, much of the city’s historic architecture is Victorian, built after the devastating Fourth-of-July fire of 1866 leveled most of the city. History is also kept alive with museum homes and maritime museums chronicling the emergence of the area from a trading and fishing

settlement into one of the nation’s most active seaports.

WATERFRONT Jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay, this region offers some of the best water access to islands, lighthouses, beaches, and historic forts in Maine. Greater Portland is home to seven lighthouses, those silent testaments to Maine’s enduring connection to the sea and a favorite of photographers from around the world. On a stroll through the Old Port, one of the country’s most successful warehouse revitalization efforts, you’ll hear the squall of gulls and the low moan of bell buoys while you smell the salt brine that wafts off the bay. Portland’s waterfront is still very much a working port, an integral and thriving part of the local economy, which is one of the authentic aspects that visitors find so appealing. In Portland, you’re never far from the sea and its changeable influences. VISUAL ARTS Portland’s official Arts District runs along a stretch of Congress Street, but the city’s flourishing art scene knows no bounds. Traditional landscapes, which have been the foundation of Maine art, now share the limelight with cutting-edge contemporary work in a wide range of media. The venerable Portland Museum of Art, celebrating three centuries of art and architecture, is known as one of the best art museums in New England, and the Maine College of Art is a respected art school whose affilated

OUTDOOR RECREAT ION Casco Bay’s flourishing arts scene is complemented by an abundant variety of outdoor recreational pursuits so accessible that you can kayak, bike, golf, or swim all day and still have time to take in dinner and a show in the evening. Within 10 minutes of downtown Portland you can glide in a canoe through an Audubon estuary, swim at a state beach, bird watch on a nature sanctuary, and photograph Portland Head Light, the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Hike a wooded trail through autumn foliage to discover a hidden waterfall. Ice-skate in Deering Oaks Park or cross-country ski alongside the ocean in winter. Every season of the year offers its unique pleasures and Maine is lucky to have seasons that each delights the senses. CUISINE Visitors are now coming to Maine from around the world for its great food and fantastic restaurant scene, as much as for the unspoiled landscape and beautiful scenery that

Institute of Contemporary Art presents innovative works by influential national and international artists. On the first Friday of each month in Portland, and the third Friday in Freeport, artists open their studios to the public and you can take a self-guided tour. Follow the Maine Art Museum Trail to experience a magnificent array of works at the state’s seven leading art museums. PERFORMANCE ARTS Performance arts also energize the Greater Portland region year-round. The summer skies are filled with concerts and the Old Port comes to life at night with an eclectic mix of live music in its pubs and concert halls. Portland has its own symphony orchestra, choral arts society, professional theater and dance troupes, even a repertory opera com- pany. In Freeport, free outdoor concerts in Discovery Park offer an exciting musical evening. Greater Portland is the perfect combination of small-town intimacy with a heavy dose of large metropolitan culture.

AUTHENT IC ALLURE It’s all right here: great dining and shopping,

have long been the mainstay of the region’s appeal. Bon Appétit magazine dubbed Portland “America’s Foodiest Small Town” in recognition of the excellence achieved by our chefs, restaurants, and food purveyors. We’re so proud of our food scene that we’ve created an event to celebrate and share it. Harvest on the Harbor is a multi-day culinary festival held each fall on Portland’s waterfront, and draws foodies from near and far. FAMI LY FUN Greater Portland is fun for the whole family, so don’t leave the kids at home. They’ll love the hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum and a ride on an historic streetcar, steam train, or Model-T at one of the region’s transportation museums. Baseball, hockey, and basketball fans will find big-league entertainment at minor-league prices at one of Portland’s home-team games. From amusement parks to wildlife parks, agricultural fairs to folk-life festivals, there are so many things to entertain active kids of all ages.

hopping nightlife, outdoor recreation, historical and cultural attractions, and stunning natural beauty. Its small scale, accessible waterfront, Old World ambience, and youthful vibe have propelled Portland to the top of many national lists of best places to vacation. But you won’t have to give up the quintessential Maine coast to enjoy all that Greater Portland has to offer — islands, lighthouses, beaches, and surf crashing on the rocky shore are all in proximity of Portland’s vibrant, historic downtown. Although Maine is a large state with varied landscapes, Portland is ideally located for a taste of it all — for jaunts into the countryside, to the nearby Lakes and Mountains region, and for forays out on Casco Bay and its many islands. The following itinerary packs an amazing diversity of attractions into a memorable weekend getaway based in Maine’s port city. NEARBY LAKES AND MOUNTAINS Start your visit at a cozy bed & breakfast or one of our welcoming hotels and head out to dine on seafood, steak, and local greens. Begin your first full day driving an hour inland to Range Pond or Sebago Lake State Park for an afternoon swim in warm water on undeveloped lakefront. Or meander up picturesque Route 26, visiting the unique attractions rich in culture, ecology, and history that make up the Gems of 26. Or try your luck at the region’s newest

hot spot, Oxford Casino.

bike on the unspoiled island roads, break- ing for lunch at the Inn on Peaks Island. SWEET F INISH Once back on the mainland, complete your weekend getaway with a lobster dinner and music served dockside at Portland Lobster Company or DiMillo’s On the Water, or at a number of casual and elegant city restaurants. You’ll head home with so many sights and flavors to savor — imagine staying longer on your next visit.

SOPHIST ICATED NIGHTL I FE Come back to an exceptional dining experience; the region’s vibe and availability of abundant fresh seafood, meat, and produce have been attracting top-notch chefs who are creating a national culinary stir. Enjoy a cocktail or coffee in a local tavern then head to the theater or spend an evening with Portland Symphony Orchestra or Portland Ovations. You’ll find the variety of food and arts in Portland to be unsurpassed for a city our size. HIKE AND BIKE ON CASCO BAY ISLANDS After a good night’s rest, grab a coffee at one of the comfy cafés nestled along the Old Port’s cobblestone streets. Bring your bike or rent one in town and catch the Casco Bay Lines ferry, enjoying salty breezes and beautiful ocean waters on the short ride to Peaks Island. Hike or

LOCAL TIP In downtown Portland, it’s an easy stroll between hotel, restaurant, and nightspot. Visit a local brew pub or wine bar, feeling free to indulge, and enjoy a safe walk home afterwards.

I T’S A MAD GIRL WORLD Portland’s shops and boutiques showcase the city’s unique fashion sense. And inside The Madhouse, that fashion sense becomes wonderfully more unique and unexpected. Passersby are lured in by the lively and curious window display, and locals go to check out the custom items, accessories, and up-cycled vintage — and to let their ears do some perusing in the local listening lounge. THE BEST BANDI T IN TOWN Downtown Portland is showered with love every Valentine’s Day (since 1976) when the mysterious Valentine’s Day Bandit posts red hearts on store fronts and restaurant windows around the city under the cover of night. Even the Fire Station flagpole flies a heart flag. Who’s behind all the hearts? That’s a secret no one’s sharing. And Portland doesn’t mind having a secret admirer. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The Quirky Side of PORTLAND

HOPS ON BOARD Ride the bus to Maine’s beer scene. The Maine Brew Bus — painted green and lovingly named Lenny — chauffeurs guests to an array of local breweries and distilleries for tours, chats with brewers, and plenty of tasting. The Local Pour Tour even includes libations beyond beer, including stops at Maine Mead Works and Urban Farm Fermentory. A CLAUS TO PAUSE There’s no shortage of holiday spirit during Santacon, Portland’s annual barcrawling Santa convention. During one night in early December, hundreds of locals decked in red suits and faux beards descend on downtown, caroling from bar to bar, drinking in good cheer, and perplexing passersby. COFFEE CONTEST ISTAS Locals may be serious about their coffee, but the monthly Thursday Night Throwdown at Bard Coffee offers area coffee slingers some friendly competition for a good cause. Baristas compete in caffeinated art, creating designs in latte foam and aiming to impress the judges. Winners earn bragging rights and proceeds support Coffee Kids. TERMINAL T IDES At low tide, the Mood Tide Garden adjacent to Ocean Gate- way Terminal appears to be a simple rock garden. There are

plenty of stones, each capped with aluminum leaf, that stand guard at the waterfront space. But during the highest tides — moon tides — saltwater floods the garden. And those stones become markers for the tides’ highest levels. DRESS -UP DANCE PARTY Friday nights at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge are a blast into the totally awesome past with 80s Night dance parties. 80s fans bust out the neon bangles, the jean jackets, and the leg warmers and take to the light-up dance floor to shake it out to popular 80s tunes. There’s even a weekly cash prize for the best 80s outfit. NOT JUST FOR A RAINY DAY Collectibles come in all forms, and on Peaks Island they come in the shape of umbrella covers. The Umbrella Cover Museum — quite possibly the world’s only museum dedicated to the rainy day cases — boasts over 700 umbrella covers, many with curious backstories. The unusual collection is open to the public daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. NOW FOR A DI FFERENT POINT OF VIEW Visitors to the Children’s Museum can climb into a camera and explore the physics of light, optics, and the human eye. The Camera Obscura exhibit is a windowless room that functions like a giant camera, bringing scenes from Portland

and beyond into view for spectators of all ages.

WALK ON THE WICKED SIDE Portland’s haunted history comes alive on a Wicked Walking Tour through the Old Port. Tour-goers are guided along the city’s streets with stories of legend, local lore, and some comedy thrown in for good measure. The evening excursions showcase Portland’s mysterious side, which even some locals don’t know about. HOLY CANNONBALL BATMAN Every town needs a watering hole. And on the Casco Bay islands, that watering hole is the ferry dock. Just about any summer day, ferry riders can watch local kids plunging into the Casco Bay waters, taking advantage of the churning The handlebar. The Magnum PI. The Uncle Rico. Whatever form a mustache takes, it is celebrated in Portland every year during Stache Pag. The mustache pageant invites mustachioed men (and women) to flaunt their facial hair in front of a packed house of mustache appreciators, and audience applause helps choose the winner. Stache Pag also features the International Moustache Film Festival. wake as the ferry pulls away. FACIAL HAIR FRENZY

With its own art museum, countless galleries, a symphony orchestra, and professional theater, Portland’s arts scene rivals that of cities much larger in size; from classical to cutting-edge, performance and visual arts are vibrantly alive and infuse the region with a surprising sophistication. Known regionally for its thriving local music scene, Portland boasts some of the best eclectic venues for rock, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, and bluegrass — it’s all here. Greater Portland is also steeped in history and anxious to share. Trolley tours, guided walking tours, and lovingly restored museum homes will expose you to the careful craftsmanship and fine architecture of past eras. Maine Maritime Museum in Bath is devoted

to the state’s rich maritime history, and a museum of Maine Civil War history is housed in the Fifth Maine Regiment Memorial Hall on Peaks Island. With our region’s proximity to the sea, there are naturally plenty of things to do on and around the water, from narrated cruises to sunset schooner sails, exciting kayak excursions to lazy beach afternoons. You can combine a love of history with one for the sea on a half-day excursion to Admiral Robert E. Peary’s Eagle Island with Atlantic Seal Cruises. Golf enthusiasts will find numerous beautifully situated courses, either beside the ocean or amid the mountains. Maine’s other regions offer superb

downhill skiing, plentiful wildlife, thrilling whitewater rafting, and fishing and swimming in crystal clear lakes. Maine is “The Great Outdoors,” so get out and enjoy it! There’s also plenty to keep the kids busy, from wildlife and amusement parks to the alluring world of antique trains, planes, and trolleys, even their own Children’s Museum & Theatre. They’ll also be fascinated by a visit to the living history museum at 19th Century Willowbrook Village. The excitment peaks at fairs and festivals throughout the summer and fall; be sure to check the calendar listings on pages 29-31 for special events for you and your family to enjoy.

Happenin’ Arts SCENE Greater Portland has a thriving arts community with the cultural offerings you’d expect to find in a much larger urban area; even in the coldest months, our arts scene never hibernates. Photo: Bob Delaney, First Friday Art Walk

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

On the first Friday of each month in Portland, and the third Friday in Freeport, sidewalks overflow with art lovers. Artist studios and galleries open their doors to the public for the evening, inviting casual art fans and aficionados to peruse the diverse selection ranging from traditional seascapes painted in watercolor to hanging installations constructed from repurposed cardboard and found objects. Outside, small crowds gather around a busking guitarist or trio of belly dancers. Local crafters chat with passersby over tables of their work — handmade jewelry, screen-printed tees, a stack of notebooks made from album covers. The monthly Art Walks are a popular facet of the region’s diverse art scene. But on any given day, art to suit a variety of tastes can readily be found. Open year-round, the Portland Museum of Art exhibits classic European art by

Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Claude Monet. Other museum collections tell the story of Maine’s own artistic history through the works of Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, and contemporary artists like John Bisbee. Curated galleries showcase and sell works on canvas, crafted in glass, or carved from wood. Sophisticated art-seekers can look to professional theatrical performances from Portland Stage and to Portland Ovations, the arts organization that supplies Maine with cultural classics like string quartets and The Joffrey Ballet. Portland Ovations also brings innovative performances to town, including dance company MOMIX and the choreographed percussion of STOMP, as well as rockin’ musical theater like "Rock of Ages.” The well-regarded Portland Symphony Orchestra regularly fills Merrill Auditorium with orchestral sounds, fromMahler’s Fifth Symphony

to Paul Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler.” And the PSO POPS! performances have been known to aptly take on the music of Madonna, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. When the weather is warm and the foot traffic high, art takes to the streets with South Portland’s Art in the Park, Freeport’s Fall in the Village Art Festival, and the WCSH 6 Sidewalk Art Festival, featuring the work of hundreds of artists fromMaine and the entire eastern seaboard.

LOCAL TIP Catch live music in bars and pubs throughout the Old Port and free outdoor concerts in the summer months in downtown parks and squares. (See page 31 for dates)

Paddling PLEASURES A coastal cruise atop a stand-up paddleboard isn’t exactly like walking on water — but it comes wonderfully close. The sport of stand-up paddleboarding has officially arrived in Maine, giving paddlers the chance to stroll the ocean standing up. Photo: Dustin Turin

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Paddleboarding originated in Hawaii several decades ago, and here in Maine it has become increasingly popular with outdoor adventurers who appreciate the unique opportunity to tour local rivers, lakes, and harbors with the water just under their feet. Paddleboards can cruise in shallow waters or be paddled right up to an area beach – places a boat simply can’t go. It's a leisurely way to take to Maine's scenic waterways. Paddle the mellow Audubon preserve in Scarborough and count shorebirds along the way, or take to the Atlantic and keep your eyes peeled for curious seals. A paddleboard looks much like an oversized sur-oard, and the longer, wider dimensions give it stand-on stability. They can tour flat water just like a kayak, can catch waves like a sur-oard, and can replace the canoe for avid fishermen. Even for first-timers,

stand-up paddleboarding is incredibly accessible. A little bit of balance is all that’s needed, and new paddleboarders might be surprised by how quickly they pick it up. SOPOSUP, a dedicated paddleboard shop in South Portland, offers one-hour lessons throughout the summer. They also have paddleboard yoga classes and “paddlebirding” – bird watching from a paddleboard. Lessons often take place in Cape Elizabeth’s scenic Kettle Cove, where the rocky coastline serves as a backdrop and a handful of moored fish- ing boats keep a watchful eye. And if balance should momentarily escape you, enjoy a refreshing splash into water. That's half the fun. There’s also plenty of opportunity to let your inner explorer lead the way. Maine Island Kayak Company offers full-day and half-day guided kayak tours in and around the nooks and crannies of

Casco Bay’s many islands. Novice and experienced paddlers can investigate the craggy shoreline, Civil War-era forts, and hidden beaches, or get an ecological education on Maine’s amazing geologi- cal history. And along the way – perhaps after you’ve surveyed a lighthouse or climbed the ramparts of Fort Gorges, accessible only by private vessel – you’ll find yourself hypnotized by the rhythmic plunge of your paddle and by the sound of the Atlantic lapping at your boat.

LOCAL TIP You can sail, surf, and paddle throughout Casco Bay and the Lakes Region but don’t miss the exciting

whitewater rafting on Maine’s wild rivers or a carefree float trip below the rapids.
