2017 Visitor's Guide

MUST-DOs

EAT SOMETHING Farm-to-table, community supported agri- culture, sustainable seafood—in Maine these aren’t trends, they’re traditions. Maine has an abundance of authentic ingredients; fishermen haul fresh lobster and seafood to the docks every day, and organic farms and dairies support year-round farmers’ markets with locally raised meats, vegetables, and herbs bursting with natural flavor. Enjoy views of Casco Bay from restaurants that line the harbor or soak up the ambiance of venues tucked away inside beautifully restored historic buildings. Dine on time- honored seafood and American fare or explore ethnic offerings that fuse modern interpretations with traditional Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines for delicious results.

SHOP ENDLESSLY

STEP BACK IN TIME We’re proud of our history and keep it forefront with attention to architectural preservation and numerous historical sites open to the public. The Maine Historical Society maintains an extensive collection of artifacts that vividly bring Maine history to life. Adjacent to the Historical Society, in the heart of bustling Congress Street, the boyhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the oldest standing structure on the Portland peninsula. Museum homes invite you to step back in time and gain a greater perspective and respect for the historic forces that continue to influence our lives. Be sure to tour Victoria Mansion, one of the greatest 19th century houses in the country and unlike anything else in Portland.

With specialty shops for dog lovers, sock collectors, and those who love to cook (and eat!), you’ll be tempted to bring home several treasures. Poke through shops and galleries lining the cobblestone streets of the Old Port. Look for hand-crafted items inspired by Maine’s natural land and seascapes. Find everything under one roof at the Maine Mall and seek out bargains at Freeport’s outlets. Don’t be deterred if you get the late night shopping bug— L.L.Bean, the world-renowned out- fitter, is open 24/7 year-round for essential gear for all your outdoor adventures.
