CRASHING ON THE ROCKY SHORE…

Theseare the enduring images that come to mind when people think of the classic Maine coast. Here, in Greater Portland, you'll absolutely experience the quintessential Maine coast… …plus a whole lot more! Maine's largest metropolitan area is listed time and again at the top of best places to vacation from amid destinations in the northeast, the United States, and even worldwide. Greater Portland hosts a vibrant arts scene, exceptional shopping, gourmet cuisine, and fabulous outdoor recreation, all set amidst a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. Back coves and portholes. Ferries and festivals. Mansions and microbrews. It seems impossible that a single seaside city could offer so much. And yet, the Greater Portland region is a tribute to diversity and Portland a city of contrasts. Modern buildings brush sleeves with Victorian neighborhoods and young professionals and old salts nod to each other over their morning coffee. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s "City by the Sea,” once a trading and fishing settlement, has maintained much of its 19th century architecture, landmarks, and flavor, and its adventurous spirit is now woven into the region’s fabric. You’ll see evidence of it in its historic homes and, on closer inspection, within its lauded museums, independent art studios, and galleries. Jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay, Portland offers some of the best water access to neighboring islands, historic forts, and lighthouses in all of Maine. Portland's waterfront is still very much a working port, an integral and thriving part of the local economy, as well as a lively mixture of rich nightlife and cutting-edge cuisine. Go 10 or 15 minutes in any direction and you'll be surprised you're anywhere near Maine's largest metropolitan area. Set like a jewel in the crown of Casco Bay, Portland is unique in its position as a major cultural center that equally embraces its natural environment. Both surrounding and within Portland, parks and preserves allow access to the tranquil natural beauty that Maine is renowned for. Our neighboring communities invite visitors to feel a part of the warp and weave of local life. Whether you're out for a day of shopping, visiting museums and galleries, or touring historic sites, you're never far from places of pure, scenic beauty; it's one of the reasons we call Portland "Authentic By Nature."

MUST-DOs

EAT SOMETHING Farm-to-table, community supported agri- culture, sustainable seafood—in Maine these aren’t trends, they’re traditions. Maine has an abundance of authentic ingredients; fishermen haul fresh lobster and seafood to the docks every day, and organic farms and dairies support year-round farmers’ markets with locally raised meats, vegetables, and herbs bursting with natural flavor. Enjoy views of Casco Bay from restaurants that line the harbor or soak up the ambiance of venues tucked away inside beautifully restored historic buildings. Dine on time- honored seafood and American fare or explore ethnic offerings that fuse modern interpretations with traditional Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines for delicious results.

SHOP ENDLESSLY

STEP BACK IN TIME We’re proud of our history and keep it forefront with attention to architectural preservation and numerous historical sites open to the public. The Maine Historical Society maintains an extensive collection of artifacts that vividly bring Maine history to life. Adjacent to the Historical Society, in the heart of bustling Congress Street, the boyhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the oldest standing structure on the Portland peninsula. Museum homes invite you to step back in time and gain a greater perspective and respect for the historic forces that continue to influence our lives. Be sure to tour Victoria Mansion, one of the greatest 19th century houses in the country and unlike anything else in Portland.

With specialty shops for dog lovers, sock collectors, and those who love to cook (and eat!), you’ll be tempted to bring home several treasures. Poke through shops and galleries lining the cobblestone streets of the Old Port. Look for hand-crafted items inspired by Maine’s natural land and seascapes. Find everything under one roof at the Maine Mall and seek out bargains at Freeport’s outlets. Don’t be deterred if you get the late night shopping bug— L.L.Bean, the world-renowned out- fitter, is open 24/7 year-round for essential gear for all your outdoor adventures.

WHAT DO I NEED TO SEE?

We’ll keep you as busy as you want to be! Here are some of the top activities our visitors rave about… let us know yours!

PHOTOS, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: BENJAMIN WILLIAMSON; BETHANY + DAN PHOTOGRAPHY; DOWN EAST DUCK TOURS; DAN SRIP ASERT; FREEPORT USA; VISIT PORTLAND/CHRIS RICCARDO; COREY TEMPLETON BEACHCOMB Although Maine is renowned for its many miles of rocky coastline, you won’t have to give up beautiful sand beaches when you visit—we’ve got seven sandy seaside playgrounds within a stone’s throw of downtown Portland. You can be sun tanning or surf boarding in the afternoon and enjoying a play or live music by nightfall. And many beaches are dog-friendly, allowing your furry friends full romping privileges from fall through spring. Bring or rent bicycles to explore the islands including beaches and secluded coves. Nearby, Old Orchard Beach’s seven sandy miles are crowned by an historic pier, boardwalk, and Palace Playland, New England’s only beachfront amusement park.

GO AFLOAT Surf crashing on the rockbound shore, salty sea breezes, seagulls squawking overhead—to really experience Greater Portland in its geographic context, you’ll want to venture out to sea. Get up close and personal with seals and lighthouses on a harbor cruise or haul lobsters that you can cook up for dinner. Rent a sea kayak or paddleboard at East End Beach and take off; you can explore the parapets of Fort Gorges, the hexagonal stone structure off the Eastern Prom. Venture to one of the populated islands on the Casco Bay Lines ferry or stay aboard for the round trip excursion. Go whale watching or deep-sea fishing or sail into the sunset on a wooden schooner. See listings for cruises and tours [p. 21-22].

GET TAPPED OUT Maine is at the forefront of the craft beverage boom, and Greater Portland has some of the most accessible, palate- pleasing imbibing opportunities around! For a car(e)free experience, join the Maine Brew Bus or Maine Beer Tours for a behind-the-scenes look at the fermentation process with plenty of samples. The East Bayside and Riverside neighborhoods contain a concentration of breweries and distilleries, making it easy to visit a number at once. As you wind your way through Portland’s Old Port, stop into the Sweetgrass tasting room for a sample of their flavored dessert wines. Across the street, Vena’s Fizz House offers its own botanical- infused fizzes, mocktails, and cocktails.

CULTURE

CALM

Our neighbors to the south love to come to Portland for, among other things, Happy Hour. At many of Portland’s restaurants, the late afternoon to early evening time slot is an opportunity to try out a new spot with daily specials and bargain beverages; some places even put out a complimentary spread for you to enjoy with your cheap drinks. At Portland’s micro- breweries, there’s something new brewing every season so we recommend repeat visits.

Close enough for a weekend getaway from Boston and New York, and small enough to be intimate, Portland is perfect for sharing with your best friend or romantic spark. Take a long walk on the beach, savor an elegant meal, enjoy live music at a club, and stroll leisurely back to an in-town hotel or B&B. Consider Portland for a honeymoon and let us celebrate with you. Gay marriage is legal in Maine and LGBTQ couples are warmly welcomed.

The most cultured cityphile will be amazed at all that’s going on in Portland and the ease and value compared with larger downtowns. Portland has its own symphony orchestra, professional theatre and dance troupes, even a repertory opera company. Portland Museum of Art has significant holdings of Maine, American, and European works, and the Arts District is filled with galleries that open in a festive celebration the first Friday of each month.

You can really get away from it all in Maine. While there’s plenty to do in the Greater Portland region, you may need to just chill on a beach for a week, or hike some lesser visited paths and rejuvenate yourself surrounded by landscapes and seascapes of incredible beauty. Pamper yourself at a day spa or stay at a full-service resort with a spa. Sit by a cozy fire in winter with a friend. Come see why we say: “Maine, TheWay Life Should Be.”

CUISINE PHOTOS, FROM LEFT: BETHANY + DAN PHOTOGRAPHY; JONATHAN REECE/PORTLAND BALLET; TIM GREENWAY; CHRIS LAWARENCE; CFW PHOTOGRAPHY; COREY TEMPLETON (2); ROBERT WIT KOWSKI/VI SIT PORTLAND With its farmers, fishermen, and five-star chefs, cutting- edge culinary artistry is now Maine’s calling card and food- ies are flocking here. You can’t walk down the street without bumping into several ways to treat your taste buds! Whether you come to Maine primarily for the beautiful scenery or for the fabulous food, you’ll enjoy both, often at the same time. Visit the third week in October for Harvest on the Harbor, Portland’s celebration of all things culinary. COMMEMORATIVE Like most cities, Portland is sprinkled with statues that honor the accomplishments of its forebears. The prolific film director, John Ford, is so recognized as is poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. For those that like to know a destination from its roots up, historical references are everywhere, such as the 16 markers that comprise the Portland Freedom Trail, a self-guided tour about the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movement.

CHILDREN

CRUISE

Don’t leave the kids at home! They’ll love the hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum or riding a historic streetcar, steam train, or Model-T at one of the region’s transportation museums. Catch a home game of the Portland Sea Dogs (baseball) or Maine Red Claws (basket- ball) teams. See a moose at the Maine Wildlife Park and let your kids vent their energy running along the beach or playing laser tag. Make family memories in Maine.

Portland has become a popular cruise destination, especially in the fall. If you arrive here via cruise ship you’ll likely have several tour options to sign up for before disembarking. But it’s easy to spend a half day downtown on your own. Sightseeing tours leave from Commercial Street, and the bustling Old Port is a few blocks away with cafes and boutiques that beckon. For an authentic experience, explore one of the few remaining work- ing waterfronts in the country.
