2017 Visitor's Guide

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN WINTER?

The quiet season is a great time to indulge in Greater Portland… inside and out!

DO TASTINGS Maine's reputation as a culinary destination with award-winning chefs and restaurants is well deserved, and also includes a vibrant craft beverage scene. It’s easy to try our taste with tours designed to experience local food, beer, wine, and spirits popular in Greater Portland. Happy Hours and events like Flavors of Freeport and Maine Restaurant Week expand palates without busting wallets, while also feeding your soul.

DO THE ARTS For culture lovers, winter is the ideal time to visit Portland—professional theatre and dance troupe seasons are in full swing, packing the colder months with lots of show stoppers. The Portland Symphony Orchestra and Portland Ovations bring world-class performances to beautiful Merrill Auditorium, and the Portland Rossini Club presents classical concerts at St. Luke’s Cathedral. First Friday Art Walks, galleries art museums, theatres, and venues stay open all year.

DO HOLIDAYS Portland’s Victorian-era roots are especially evident during the holiday season when horse-drawn carriages roll over cobblestones, street lamps glisten with snowflakes, and Portland Ballet performs its Victorian Nutcracker. Make memories with your kids on a magical voyage from Portland to the North Pole aboard the Polar Express. Listen to carol- ers as you shop our unique boutiques for special gifts and enjoy enchanting decorations throughout the region. Come to Maine this year and let us light up your holidays.

DO SNOW In Maine, downhill skiers and snowboarders will find some of the most depend- able snow and best skiing in the east. In Greater Portland you can cross-country ski alongside the surf, across golf courses, and through scented pine forests, or on the 15 miles of groomed Nordic trails at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools offer “Walk-On Adventures” in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Bring snow tubes to enjoy the great hills at Portland’s Payson Park.
