CAR FREE

It’s easy to navigate Portland and the surrounding vicinity without a car, so try leaving yours behind. PLANES, TRAINS, NO AUTOMOBILES

Concord Coach buses you to Maine from Boston’s North Station or Logan Airport, and twice daily from NYC. Metro’s Breeze offers express bus service between the Portland Transportation Center, downtown, and the towns of Falmouth, Yarmouth, and Freeport to the north. Hop a Casco Bay Lines ferry or Sea Taxi to explore the nearby populated islands. Your bikes can come too! Portland Trails maintains a 70-mile network of bicycle and pedestrian routes through- out the region. Maps and extensive trail info at trails.org.

Many hotels include a complimentary shuttle from the airport, and some even bring their guests into town and pick them up after a night out—be sure to ask. You'll save hours of driving time from Nova Scotia by taking the CAT high-speed ferry for just 5 1/2 hours. Train riders coming from New York or Con- necticut make a simple connection from Boston’s South Station to catch the Amtrak Downeaster from North Station. The accessible Metro bus offers a robust schedule including the airport, the Maine Mall, and connections to other municipal bus systems at Metro's Elm Street hub.

Bicycle rentals are available on Portland’s waterfront between the Casco Bay Ferry terminal and Ocean Gateway Information Center. Gorham Bike & Ski will deliver bikes to the train/bus station, hotels, or location of your choice. You can arrive with bicycles via train or bus, and bring them on the local Metro bus once here. Get an overview of the area on a trolley, fire engine, or duck boat tour. Or step aboard one of the cruise boats lining the waterfront for a breezy look at Casco Bay. And when you just can’t get to a certain landmark or attraction without a car, take a private customized tour with Maine Day Trip and leave the driving to them.
