In January, a powerful winter storm inflicted damage on many coastal communities throughout Maine. In South Portland stunned observers watched as three fishing shacks dating from the late 1800’s were literally swept off to sea. The historic structures served as a backdrop for numerous photos and paintings—they were revered as a testimony to the region’s fishing heritage and their loss has been widely mourned. Now a movement is underway to raise funds to rebuild the iconic shacks. Architects and carpenters have volunteered their time and private funds will be used for materials. P erched on Casco Bay, Greater Portland offers up everything you’d expect from the Maine coast… historic forts, and lighthouses in all of Maine. Portland’s waterfront is still very much a
…plus a whole lot more! Maine’s largest metropolitan area time and again leads “Top Places” and “Best of” lists for vacation destinations in the U.S., and even worldwide. Greater Portland’s vibrant arts scene, exceptional shopping, gourmet cuisine, and fabulous outdoor recreation are only matched by its breathtaking natural surroundings. Ferries and festivals. Mansions and microbrews. Art walks and wine talks. It seems impossible that a single seaside city could offer so much. And yet, the Greater Portland Region is a tribute to diversity in a city of contrasts—where high-tech companies innovate in historic landmarks, and laptop millenials start their day sharing coffee with lobstermen. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “City by the Sea,” once a trading and fishing settlement, has expanded into a thriving metro area, yet maintains much of its 19th-century architecture, landmarks, and adventurous spirit. New Mainers—immigrants and refugees from Africa, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, as well as transplants from throughout the US—are infusing Greater Portland with fresh perspectives and the best aspects of their cultures. Portland offers some of the best access to neighboring islands (just a ferry ride away),
working port, an integral and thriving part of the local economy, as well as a lively mixture of rich nightlife and cutting-edge cuisine. Go 10 or 15 minutes in any direction and you’ll be surprised you’re anywhere near Maine’s largest metropolitan area. Greater Portland is unique as a major cultural center that equally embraces its natural environment; plentiful parks and nature preserves are quick connections to tranquility and beauty within the state’s largest urban center.* Although its hopping nightlife, great dining, cultural attractions, and Old World ambience have propelled Portland to the top of best places to vacation, you won’t have to give up the quintessential Maine coast to enjoy all that Greater Portland has to offer. Whether you’re out for a day of shopping, visiting museums and galleries, or touring historic sites, you’re never far from places of pure, scenic beauty; it’s one of the reasons we say Portland is “Authentic By Nature.”
*See page 17 for a list of parks and preserves to enjoy.

FOR LOVE OF…
Greater Portland is as varied as the visitors who flock to the vibrant region—pick your passion and get started!
THE COAST Getting on or around mesmerizing and ever-changing ocean waters is easy in Greater Portland. Enjoy the sea while dining at waterfront lobster shacks and restaurants, swimming in a cove, strolling along scenic trails, or taking a driving tour of the six lighthouses within 20 minutes of downtown. Although Maine is renowned for its miles of rocky coastline, you won’t have to give up beautiful sand beaches when you visit—we’ve got uncrowded seaside playgrounds and many beaches are dog-friendly, allowing your furry friends full romping privileges from fall through spring. Bring or rent bicycles to explore the Casco Bay islands accessible by ferry. Nearby, Old Orchard Beach’s seven sandy miles are crowned by an historic pier and Palace Playland, New England’s only
THE ARTS Performing arts are flourishing in Greater Portland with Broadway-level theatre, two ballet companies, Portland’s own Symphony Orchestra (which turns 100 this year!), a Bach Festival, a Chamber Music Festival, Opera Maine, Portland Ovations productions from traditional to contemporary, and renowned summer theaters nearby. On First Friday Art Walks the esteemed Portland Museum of Art in Congress Square and dozens of galleries and studios open their doors in a festive celebration. The State Theatre and Thompson’s Point bring musical acts of every genre while immigrants from many countries have brought their own music and dance to town, infusing the region with new sounds and energy. Even the most cultured travelers will be amazed at the vibrant arts scene that’s grown up in Maine. (More on pages 18-19)
HISTORY Portland, with a consistent attention to landmark preservation, has kept a down-to earth charm and wears its history openly. Five centuries of historical impact have shaped Portland and its surrounding towns into a vibrant destination with deep-planted roots, from the Colonial-era through the wealth and opulence of the industrial age. Museum homes give a glimpse into the lives of formative residents including the beloved poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and narrated tours share fascinating tidbits of lore. The self-guided Portland Freedom Trail will take you to important sites in African American history and the fight against slavery. 30 miles north of Portland, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath chronicles the state’s rich maritime history with immersive exhibits on its 20-acre riverside campus. FOOD + DRINK It’s easy to see why Portland keeps winning culinary accolades from authorities such as Bon Appétit—from the tried-and-true favorites to the newest sensations, the sheer number of restaurants and their crazy-good offerings have planted this region firmly on the culinary map. Maine has an abundance of authentic ingredients: fishermen haul fresh lobster and seafood to the docks every day, and organic farms and dairies support year-round farmers’ markets with locally raised meats and vegetables bursting with flavor. Maine is also at the forefront of the craft beverage boom, and you can try a flight, local wine, or a spirit or creative mocktail at Greater Portland’s many bars and beverage brewers. Tasting rooms often have their own small plates or enticing food trucks to pair with favorite sips and suds. (More on pages 30-38)
SHOPPING With specialty shops for dog lovers, comic collectors, and those who love to cook (and eat!), you’ll be tempted to bring home several new purchases. Poke through shops and galleries lining the cobblestone streets of Portland’s Old Port section. Just 15 minutes north of Portland, the picturesque lanes of Freeport’s charming New England village are home to national outlets and local boutiques. Don’t be deterred if you get the late night shopping bug or lack some essential gear for the next day’s outdoor adventure—the flagship store of world famous outfitter L.L.Bean in Freeport is open 24 hours every day, year-round. And if you come from a state that hasn’t yet legalized the sale of marijuana, your trip may be enhanced by visiting one or more local purveyors of everything from flower to edibles of all types. (More on pages 40-43)
ADVENTURE Let the breeze set you free, as you explore Casco Bay by sea—no experience needed as guided tours venture out to explore the fortified islands in Portland Harbor on kayaks or paddle boards. You can charter a sailboat or head out on a deep-sea fishing adventure to catch shark, halibut, and powerful bluefin tuna. L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs let you dabble in a host of experiences from fly casting to paddlesports. Spend a day on the links or tune up indoors with X-Golf Portland. Feeling playful? Throw axes or bowling balls or escape from a locked room by solving puzzles as a team. Travel inland to experience the high-level excitement of whitewater rafting or snowmobiling with one of Maine’s outdoor adventure resorts or find your happy place on the downhill slopes at Sunday River.
