The suggestions on the next three pages represent one way to enjoy a visit to this vibrant area of Maine. You’ll also find numerous itineraries on the Blog section of visitportland.com; filter for itineraries on the left-hand navigation bar. Find activities by season or itineraries geared towards history, food, the arts, adventure, romance, and more. Another great way to get your bearings is to stop by the Visitor Information Center at Ocean Gateway where friendly local ambassadors can answer your questions and provide information about the region.
1 TAKE A TOUR Food, beer, wine, history, art, architecture, lighthouses, and more—no matter your interest, there is a tour, guided by a local’s knowledge and perspective. Walk, ride, or paddle to experience the flavors of Greater Portland. [p. 22-24] 2 EAT A LOBSTER It seems every pub, restaurant, seaside shack, and food truck has a succulent take on our most famous seafood. A lobster roll—a toasted hot dog bun heaping with lobster meat, a dollop of mayonnaise or drawn butter, and a dash of paprika—is fastest but taking the time to crack into a fresh crustacean is half the fun. [p. 32, 34-37] 3 SEE A LIGHTHOUSE There are six lights to choose from in Portland Harbor. Cape Elizabeth’s Portland Head Light (1787) is the regions #1 icon, and is one of the most photographed in the world. [p.19, 26]
