THE TOP 10 THINGS TO DO Here are the top things visitors rave about in Greater Portland. We’ll keep you as busy as you want to be!
GO AFLOAT Let the breeze set you free, as you explore Casco Bay by sea. No experience needed as guided tours venture out to explore the fortified islands in Portland Harbor on kayaks or paddle boards. You can charter a sailboat or head out on a deep-sea fishing adventure to catch shark, halibut, and powerful bluefin tuna. Tour boats leave Portland’s waterfront to behold lighthouses from a sailor’s perspective, glide alongside seals relaxing on sun soaked rocks, or dance on a festive party boat under the evening stars. Experience a working boat and haul sails or lobster traps with the crew. Or relax and take in the surrounding sea while enjoying food and wine pairings, or island hopping on America’s longest operating mailboat. (More on pages 22-24)

TASTE THE TOWN It’s easy to see why Portland keeps winning culinary accolades from authorities such as Bon Appétit—from the tried and true favorites to the newest sensations, the sheer number of restaurants and their crazy-good offerings have planted this region firmly on the culinary map. Maine has an abun dance of authentic ingredients: fishermen haul fresh lobster and seafood to the docks every day and organic farms and dairies support year-round farmers’ markets with locally raised meats and vegetables bursting with flavor. Enjoy views of Casco Bay from restaurants that line the harbor or soak up the ambiance of venues tucked away inside beautifully restored historic buildings. Of course, try our succulent lobster with all the trimmings or stuffed in a toasted roll. (More on pages 31, 32, 34-37)
GET CRAFTY Maine is at the forefront of the craft beverage boom and you can try a flight, local wine, or a spirit with a twist at any of Greater Portland’s many alcohol-inspired businesses. Tasting rooms often have their own small plates or enticing food trucks to pair with favorite sips and suds. It’s exciting to catch a new a release or a batch in progress on a brewery or distillery tour. The region’s micro size allows for ease of travel and ability to explore a surprising variety of local craft drinks in one outing; the East Bayside and Riverside neighborhoods both contain a dense concentration of breweries and distilleries. Beer-themed bus and walking tours make indulging in the expansive selection of microbrews and local spirits thoroughly safe as well as educational and fun. (More on page 33)
SEE THE LIGHT No less than six lighthouses line Portland Harbor to protect incoming ships from the area’s famously rocky coast. The iconic beacons of Greater Portland are each unique representations of nautical history. Whether fashioned after Greek temples, attached to private homes, or having the distinction of being the first lighthouse commissioned by the U.S. government, these classic structures evoke a romantic sense of the sea. Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth is one of the most picturesque cliff-side towers found anywhere, and its quintessential New England design makes it one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.

And many beaches are dog-friendly, allowing your furry friends full romping privileges from fall through spring. Bring or rent bicycles to explore the islands including beaches and secluded coves. Nearby, Old Orchard Beach’s seven sandy miles are crowned by an historic pier and Palace Playland, New England’s only beachfront amusement park.
TAKE THE LONG VIEW Portland, with a consistent attention to landmark preservation, has kept a down-to earth charm and wears its history openly. Five centuries of historical impact have shaped Portland and its surrounding towns into a vibrant destination with deep-planted roots, from the Colonial-era through the wealth and opulence of the industrial age. Museum homes and maritime museums chronicle the emergence of the region from a trading and fishing settlement into one of the nation’s most active seaports. Poke through shops and galleries lining the cobblestone streets of Portland’s Old Port section. Find everything under one roof at The Maine Mall in South Portland. Just 15 minutes north of Portland, the picturesque lanes of Freeport’s charming New England village are home to national outlets and local bou tiques. Don’t be deterred if you get the late night shopping bug or lack some essential gear for the next day’s outdoor adventure— the flagship store of world-famous outfitter L.L.Bean in Freeport is open 24 hours every day, year-round. (More on pages 40-44)
GO COASTAL Whether you are drawn to crashing surf on dramatic cliffs, lured by the lapping waves of expansive beaches, or hypnotized by the quiet tides of salt marshes, getting on or around the sea is a must in Greater Portland. For a sea change in excitement, get out on the water for sailing, fishing, kayaking, whale watching, or island hopping. Enjoy special waterside festivities such as tug boat races, tall-ship regattas, and a holiday parade of lights. (More on pages 27)
PARTY ON Maine’s largest metro area has lots of exciting activities to get the party started–or keep one going. Fine dining amid the region’s celebrated culinary scene is a great way to begin any evening. 3 hours or 3 days (or more), make the most of your stay in Greater Portland. TENWAYS TO ENJOY THREE DAYS
DAY ONE
SEE GREATER PORTLAND YOURWAY! T here are so many things to do in Maine’s Casco Bay region, and we’ve made it easy for you to hone in on your favorite pursuits. The suggestions on the next three pages represent one way to enjoy a visit to this vibrant area of Maine. You’ll also find numerous itineraries on the Blog section of visitportland.com; filter for itineraries on the left-hand navigation bar. Find activities by season or itineraries geared towards history, food, the arts, adventure, romance, and more. Another great way to get your bearings is to stop by the Visitor Information Center at Ocean Gateway where friendly local ambassadors can answer your questions and provide information about the region.
1 TAKE A TOUR Food, beer, wine, history, art, architecture, lighthouses, and more—no matter your interest, there is a tour, guided by a local’s knowledge and perspective. Walk, ride, or paddle to experience the flavors of Greater Portland. [p. 22-24] 2 EAT A LOBSTER It seems every pub, restaurant, seaside shack, and food truck has a succulent take on our most famous seafood. A lobster roll—a toasted hot dog bun heaping with lobster meat, a dollop of mayonnaise or drawn butter, and a dash of paprika—is fastest but taking the time to crack into a fresh crustacean is half the fun. [p. 32, 34-37] 3 SEE A LIGHTHOUSE There are six lights to choose from in Portland Harbor. Cape Elizabeth’s Portland Head Light (1787) is the regions #1 icon, and is one of the most photographed in the world. [p.19, 26]

DAY TWO
4 SEIZE THE DAY
Greater Portland is the first major U.S. metro area to greet the day. Start yours by watching the mesmerizing sunrise over the ocean from your hotel room window, a waterfront perch, an area lighthouse, or the deck of a Casco Bay harbor ferry. The region’s historical sites offer you a fascinating look at culture and arts of yore. Visit a museum home for a glimpse into life in another age; hear about the famous and infamous buried in Eastern Cemetery; learn about Maine’s abolitionist movement on the Portland FreedomTrail; explore the hexagonal Fort Gorges, accessible only by boat. [p. 24-28] With so many talented chefs, restaurants, bakeries, and breweries to taste, it’s little surprise Bon Appétit once named Portland “Restaurant City of the Year”. From fresh flavorful seafood, to wicked whoopee pies, your taste buds will be singing. [p. 30-37] There’s always a variety of performances going on from ballet and theater, to opera and the symphony, to concerts with national headliners and local musicians at indoor music halls, parks, and cozy pubs. It’s hard not to plan a fun night out. [p. 19, 22]

DAY THREE 8 RELAX & UNWIND
Maine’s largest city is surrounded by land and seascapes that will recharge your batteries. Meander along over 70 miles of Portland Trails, through leafy woods, rocky shores, and peaceful salt marshes. Climb to the top of Pownal’s Bradbury Mountain and view a carpet of autumn colors below you. Go bird-watching at an Audubon sanctuary or right in Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery. You can even hike to a waterfall within Portland city limits! Many local coffeeshops and teahouses offer cozy interiors in which to while away the time while indulging in bites and brews. If you’d rather wet your whistle with a beer or cocktail, try a local brewery, distillery, or winery for your afternoon pick-me-up. [p. 31, 33] FIND A KEEPSAKE It’s always fun to shop for souvenirs when you’ve gotten to know a destination. Maybe it’s a practical bag made from authentic sails, or a unique craft beer that delighted you. Perhaps you’ll bring home a funny tee shirt or a locally designed piece of jewelry or artwork. Whatever the memory, we hope it brings you back to Maine soon. [p. 40-44]
