Visitor's Guide 2022-2023
TIME TO COAST In the Casco Bay region, enjoying time on or around the water is a must!
• Walk along Commercial Street for a glimpse of Portland’s working waterfront but, for safety, stay away from the wharfs. • Take a cruise on one of the many wind or motor-powered tour boats past forts, seals, and lighthouses. • Bicycle throughout Portland and South Portland on paths that hug the shore. • Join Seacoast Tours of Freeport to visit an oyster farm and sample the freshest of oysters straight from the sea. • Explore the hexagonal fort off Portland’s shoreline, accessible by kayak or private boat, or with tours by the Friends of Fort Gorges. • Take a driving tour of the five lighthouses in Greater Portland, all within 20 minutes of downtown!*
While you’re here, take advantage of some “shore” bets—here’s a few ideas. • Spend the day sunbathing and swimming at sandy beaches in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Freeport, or South Portland. • Rent kayaks or paddleboards and get out on the water with a licensed guide. • Lunch at Two Lights Lobster Shack, while waves crash on the rocky shore. • Take the Casco Bay Lines ferry to a nearby island to explore a quiet, coastal community. • Haul lobsters from the sea with a Maine lobsterman as you learn about this important state industry.
• If visiting in winter, Cross-country ski around Mackworth Island in Falmouth, or alongside the sea at Winslow Park in South Freeport.
