INLAND EXPLORATIONS Put these two terrific towns on your itinerary!

W hile you’re in Greater Portland, there’s a lot to discover away from the coast in nearby estbrook and Gorham. These two quieter destinations to the west of Portland offer uncrowded streets and relaxing vistas. Both among the fastest growing communities in Southern Maine, they’ll charm you with their small-town atmosphere and hospitality. Gorham’s rich history of agriculture and manufacturing is celebrated at The Hop Yard, which grows ingredients for the burgeoning Maine beer industry and allows the centuries old Hamblen Farm to be preserved as farmland. With approximately 50 miles of multi-use trails, Gorham is becoming one of the top mountain biking destinations in the state. And visitors accessing the year-round trail system via its 13 trailheads have plenty of options for a post-ride meal or thirst-quenching beverage, such as Lone Pine Brewing’s tasting room and Junction Bowl, a popular village hangout providing family-friendly

entertainment. But Gorham isn’t just about recreation and tasty treats—on University of Southern Maine’s campus you’ll find an art gallery, theater, and University of Southern Maine School of Music concerts year-round. DowntownWestbrook’s tagline “A River Runs Through Us” says a lot about this ever-flowing town. Formerly an industrial site, Westbrook’s River Walk is a remarkable transformation from the city’s industrial roots to an attractive bike and pedestrian path that follows the bank of the Presumpscot River into Riverbank Park and historic downtown. Westbrook’s compact downtown is full of restaurants and pubs, artisan shops, and live music. Westbrook is also home to Rock Row, a multi-phased development designed around a majestic natural quarry, which combines retail, residential, dining, and hotel venues.
